Development cooperation: Manifesto

The purpose of our enterprise

Software Workers was founded upon the belief that technology is not merely a tool of efficiency, but a powerful instrument of cooperation and freedom.

To take part in International Cooperation means applying IT expertise to a broader goal: by working hand in hand to build models of development, based on autonomy, knowledge, and the dignity of work.

Technology that includes

In areas with limited connectivity, we bring local-first solutions: software that functions even with intermittent connectivity, ensuring that data always remains in the hands of the communities who use it.

For us, innovation is only effective when it is accessible and understandable.

We do not export products: we co-design tools.

We do not deliver support: we share expertise.

Open Source as a choice of freedom

We believe in Free and Open Source Software as a guarantee of transparency, security, and independence.

Developing code opens access to countless opportunities: enabling schools, public administrations, and local enterprises to grow without proprietary lock-ins, while contributing to digital commons.

Every line of code written is an act of trust in collective knowledge.

Alliances among equals

We collaborate with universities, NGOs, and local institutions through relationships built on reciprocity.

Global technical knowledge interweaves with local understanding of low-income country contexts, generating value through exchange.

We want our local branches and spin-offs to be not mere extensions of a centre, but autonomous nuclei of distributed innovation.

Sustainable development and responsibility

Each project begins with a dual responsibility: economic and social.

Efficiency cannot be separated from social impact on beneficiary communities.

For this reason, we adopt practices such as:

  • co-design that prioritises local needs
  • transparent accountability
  • participatory evaluation
  • minimising the environmental footprint of technology

People at the centre

Behind every digital infrastructure are faces, stories, and aspirations.

Our priority is to strengthen the abilities of those who work, study, and lead within their local contexts.

A well-crafted piece of software does not replace human intelligence — it amplifies it.

A shared commitment

With this Manifesto, we — members and collaborators of Software Workers — commit to acting with technical rigour, integrity, and respect.

We invite our partners, investors, and institutions to recognise themselves in these values and contribute to a model of economic cooperation driven by ethics and founded on shared knowledge.
